High above the valleys of DragonZone, where the mountains reached into the clouds and the wind never seemed to stop playing, lived a little Air Dragonling named Aeris.
Aeris loved the wind.
He loved chasing leaves as they tumbled across the mountaintops.
He loved stretching his wings and letting sudden gusts lift his paws from the ground.
And he especially loved racing the clouds.
The clouds didn't know they were racing, of course.
But Aeris did.
"Too slow!" he would laugh as he bounded across the grassy ridge.
Then a gust would catch beneath his wings—
Whoosh!
—and Aeris would sail through the air for several glorious moments before landing in a soft patch of grass.
Usually.
Sometimes he landed in bushes.
Once he landed in a very surprised sheep.
But Aeris never minded.
To him, the wind meant adventure.
One bright morning, Aeris was chasing a yellow leaf along the mountainside when something sparkling drifted past his nose.
He stopped.
It wasn't a leaf.
It was a tiny silver seed attached to a soft white tuft, so light that even the gentlest breeze carried it through the air.
The seed floated upwards.
Then down.
Then sideways.
Then directly into Aeris's nose.
"Ah... ah..."
Achoo!
The seed shot away.
Aeris gasped.
"Come back!"
He raced after it.
The little seed floated over rocks, between flowers and beneath a crooked branch.
Aeris followed every turn.
Eventually the breeze disappeared.
The seed slowly sank onto a flat stone.
Aeris crouched beside it.
"Where are you going?" he wondered.
A small mountain finch landed nearby.
The bird tilted its head towards the distant peaks.
Far above them was a high meadow covered in hundreds of white flowers. Their soft silver seeds danced constantly through the mountain air.
Aeris looked at the seed.
Then at the meadow.
"You came from up there?"
The finch chirped.
Aeris smiled.
"Don't worry. I'll take you home."
Aeris carefully picked up the little seed.
He climbed onto the highest rock he could find, spread his wings and waited for a gust.
Whoosh!
Up he went.
For a few moments, everything was perfect.
Then the wind changed direction.
Aeris spun sideways.
The seed slipped from his paw.
"No!"
He dived after it.
The seed floated happily away as though absolutely nothing was wrong.
Aeris caught it again.
This time he held it tightly between both paws.
Another gust arrived.
Aeris rose into the air.
The wind pushed left.
Aeris fought right.
The wind pushed right.
Aeris fought left.
Soon Aeris was flapping so hard that his little wings ached.
Finally he landed in a heap amongst the grass.
The seed rested safely between his paws.
Aeris frowned at the wind.
"You aren't helping."
The wind answered by blowing a leaf onto his head.
Aeris tried again.
And again.
Every time he attempted to carry the seed directly towards the high meadow, the wind seemed determined to take them somewhere else.
Around a cliff.
Through a patch of wildflowers.
Across a bubbling mountain stream.
At first, Aeris fought every change.
Then he noticed something.
The little seed wasn't fighting at all.
Whenever Aeris loosened his paws, its soft white tuft lifted eagerly into the breeze.
Aeris stared at it.
Perhaps the seed wasn't lost.
Perhaps Aeris was simply trying too hard to decide where it should go.
He climbed onto another rock.
This time, he didn't hold the seed.
He placed it gently on his open paw.
A breeze arrived.
The seed trembled.
Aeris almost closed his claws around it.
But he stopped.
"All right," he whispered.
"Show me."
The wind lifted the seed from his paw.
Aeris spread his wings.
And followed.
The seed sailed around the mountainside.
Aeris glided behind it.
When the wind rose, Aeris rose with it.
When it dipped, he dipped.
They swept between two tall rocks and spiralled upwards through a column of warm air.
For once, Aeris wasn't trying to beat the wind.
He wasn't trying to tell it where to go.
He was listening to it.
Soon they were higher than Aeris had ever flown before.
The valleys of DragonZone stretched far below.
Rivers glittered like silver ribbons.
Forests looked like tiny patches of green.
And ahead...
was the high meadow.
Hundreds of white flowers swayed across the mountaintop.
The little seed danced towards them.
Aeris smiled.
"You knew the way."
Then suddenly the wind weakened.
The seed began to fall.
Below it was a narrow crack between the rocks.
Aeris dived.
He swept beneath the seed and gave one gentle beat of his wings.
A small puff of air lifted it just far enough.
The seed floated over the rocks...
and landed softly in the meadow.
Aeris landed beside it.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then the wind swept across the flowers.
Hundreds of silver seeds lifted into the sky.
They surrounded Aeris like tiny stars.
Some travelled towards distant mountains.
Others drifted down into the valleys.
One sailed directly past Aeris's nose.
He smiled.
This time, he didn't chase it.
He simply watched it go.
The mountain finch landed on a nearby rock.
Aeris looked out across DragonZone as hundreds of little seeds began journeys of their own.
He had thought helping meant knowing exactly where something needed to go.
He had thought being good at flying meant conquering every gust and choosing his own direction.
But the wind had taught him something different.
Sometimes you needed to steer.
Sometimes you needed to help.
And sometimes...
you simply needed to open your paws.
Aeris stretched his wings.
A fresh breeze curled beneath them.
Instead of fighting it, he leaned into it.
The wind lifted him gently from the meadow.
Aeris laughed as he sailed across the sky.
And from that day onward, whenever the wind carried something towards a place he hadn't expected, Aeris remembered the little silver seed.
Not every journey needed to be controlled.
Some adventures only began when you were brave enough to let them.
And Aeris had discovered:
Sometimes the wind knows the way before you do.
