In a quiet corner of DragonZone, where the ancient forests climbed towards the mountains, lived a little Earth Dragonling named Thistle.
Thistle loved many things.
Digging.
Collecting interesting stones.
Watching beetles.
And, most of all, growing things.
Ever since discovering the forgotten seed that had become a beautiful flowering tree, Thistle had developed a rather unusual habit.
Whenever she found a seed, she planted it.
Whenever she found a flower, she admired it.
And whenever she found a particularly interesting patch of dirt...
Well, she usually ended up wearing most of it.
One bright morning, Thistle was carefully tending a little garden beneath the trees.
There were bluebells, golden daisies, tiny purple flowers and a young sapling that she was especially proud of.
Everything was exactly where it belonged.
Until the wind arrived.
WHOOOOOSH!
Leaves flew everywhere.
Flowers bent sideways.
A small pile of carefully collected seeds scattered across the clearing.
And something pale blue tumbled out of the sky.
THUMP!
Right into Thistle's favourite patch of soft earth.
Thistle stared.
The newcomer blinked.
"Hello!" said Aeris cheerfully.
Thistle looked at the flattened flowers.
Then at Aeris.
Then at the flowers again.
"You're sitting on my garden."
Aeris looked down.
"Oh."
He quickly stood up.
"Sorry."
A moment passed.
Then Aeris smiled.
"Lovely landing spot, though!"
Thistle wasn't entirely sure what to say to that.
Aeris had been following a particularly interesting breeze through the mountains.
The breeze had carried him over rivers, between cliffs and through a cloud shaped suspiciously like a sleeping sheep.
Then it had suddenly disappeared.
Which explained the landing.
Mostly.
Thistle began straightening the bent flowers.
Aeris watched with interest.
"What are you doing?"
"Helping everything grow."
"Does it take long?"
"Sometimes."
"How long?"
"A very long time."
Aeris looked horrified.
"That sounds exhausting."
Thistle laughed.
"Not everything needs to happen quickly."
Aeris considered this.
Then a fresh gust swept through the clearing.
Something small and golden lifted from Thistle's garden.
Her eyes widened.
"My seed!"
It was a tiny golden seed with two delicate leaves shaped like little wings.
Thistle had been saving it for a special place.
The seed spun upwards.
Aeris leapt into the air.
"I'll get it!"
But before he could catch it, the wind carried the seed above the treetops.
Then higher.
And higher.
Until it disappeared into the clouds.
Thistle stared at the empty sky.
"Oh, no."
Aeris landed beside her.
"Don't worry," he said. "I know how to follow the wind."
Thistle looked at his wings.
Then at her own.
"Well," she said slowly, "I've never flown that high before."
Aeris grinned.
"Then this is going to be fun!"
They climbed towards the mountains together.
Aeris bounded ahead, occasionally letting the wind lift him above the path.
Thistle followed more carefully.
Whenever Aeris spotted the golden seed drifting in the distance, he called out directions.
"Left!"
Thistle turned left.
"Right!"
Thistle turned right.
"Up!"
Thistle stopped.
"That's a cliff."
Aeris looked down.
"Oh. Yes."
They found another way.
Eventually the trees grew shorter, the rocks became steeper, and the clouds drifted close enough to touch.
Then Aeris spotted something extraordinary.
Floating above the mountains was a little island.
Not a particularly large island.
Just a beautiful piece of green earth suspended amongst the clouds, with a waterfall spilling from one edge and disappearing into the mist below.
Thistle gasped.
"How is that possible?"
Aeris shrugged.
"Wind?"
Thistle gave him a look.
"What?"
Aeris smiled.
"It's usually wind."
The golden seed floated towards the island.
Aeris spread his wings.
"Come on!"
Together they caught a rising current of warm air and sailed upwards.
For Aeris, it was wonderful.
For Thistle, it was slightly terrifying.
"Are we supposed to be this high?"
"Probably!"
"Probably?"
But before Thistle could ask anything else, they landed on the floating island.
The island was beautiful.
Or at least, it had been.
Old stone pathways wound between empty garden beds.
A little pond sat beneath a crooked tree.
Delicate vines hung from ancient arches.
But almost everything was dry.
The flowers had wilted.
The soil had cracked.
And the tree had lost most of its leaves.
Thistle crouched beside a garden bed.
"This place is thirsty."
Aeris looked around.
"But there's water everywhere."
He pointed towards the waterfall.
Thistle followed his gaze.
The waterfall was indeed flowing from the island.
But instead of feeding the gardens, the water rushed through a broken stone channel and spilled straight over the edge.
Thistle examined the channel.
"The water isn't reaching the plants."
Aeris peered over her shoulder.
"Can you fix it?"
Thistle smiled.
"I think so."
She began gathering stones.
Aeris watched for approximately three seconds.
Then he grew bored.
"I'll help!"
He spread his wings.
WHOOOOSH!
A powerful gust swept across the island.
Leaves scattered.
Dust swirled.
And every stone Thistle had carefully arranged rolled away.
Thistle closed her eyes.
Aeris slowly folded his wings.
"Too much?"
"A little."
"Sorry."
Thistle sighed.
Then smiled.
"Maybe we should try something smaller."
Together they began again.
Thistle collected stones and packed soft earth between the gaps in the broken channel.
Aeris used gentle little breezes to blow loose leaves and dirt away from the stones.
Thistle shaped the channel.
Aeris cleared the path.
Slowly, the water began finding its way back towards the gardens.
A little trickle appeared.
Then another.
Soon clear water was winding between the empty flower beds.
The dry earth darkened.
The roots drank.
And the little pond began to fill.
Thistle sat back proudly.
"There."
Aeris watched the water sparkle in the sunlight.
"We did it!"
Then something golden drifted past his nose.
The seed!
It had been floating above the island all along, caught in a gentle current circling the crooked tree.
Aeris leapt after it.
But this time, he didn't chase it wildly.
He remembered the little silver seed he had once followed across the mountains.
He spread his wings and guided a gentle breeze beneath the golden seed.
Slowly, carefully, he carried it towards Thistle.
The seed settled into her open paws.
Thistle smiled.
"Thank you."
Aeris beamed.
"You're welcome."
Thistle looked towards the newly watered garden.
"I think I've found somewhere special for it."
They chose a little patch of soft earth beside the pond.
Thistle scratched a small hole.
She placed the golden seed inside.
Then gently covered it with soil.
Aeris leaned closer.
"Now what?"
"Now we wait."
Aeris stared at the ground.
Nothing happened.
He stared harder.
Still nothing.
"Are you sure it's working?"
Thistle laughed.
"Remember what I said? Not everything needs to happen quickly."
Aeris sighed dramatically.
"I was afraid you'd say that."
A gentle breeze passed across the island.
The water bubbled through its restored channels.
And somewhere beneath the soil, something began to stir.
A tiny green shoot pushed through the earth.
Thistle gasped.
Aeris nearly fell into the pond.
"It's growing!"
The little shoot unfolded two delicate leaves.
Golden sunlight caught their edges.
Then something wonderful happened.
A gentle current of air curled around the young plant.
The leaves shimmered.
Tiny glowing specks rose from the surrounding soil.
And all across the island, the sleeping garden began to wake.
Little buds opened.
Vines stretched towards the sunlight.
The crooked tree rustled with fresh leaves.
Thistle watched in amazement.
Aeris floated happily above the garden.
"It's beautiful!"
Thistle nodded.
"It really is."
As the afternoon sunlight turned golden, the two Dragonlings sat beside the pond.
Below them, the valleys of DragonZone stretched into the distance.
Above them, clouds drifted lazily across the sky.
Thistle looked around the restored garden.
She had always believed the best place for growing things was somewhere safe, sheltered and close to the earth.
Aeris had always believed the most wonderful adventures were waiting somewhere beyond the next cloud.
But now Thistle had discovered a garden in the sky.
And Aeris had discovered that sometimes staying in one place long enough to help something grow could be an adventure too.
Aeris looked towards the little golden plant.
"Do you think it'll grow into a big tree?"
"Maybe."
"With golden leaves?"
"Maybe."
"And flowers?"
"Perhaps."
"And fruit?"
Thistle laughed.
"Aeris!"
"What?"
"Give it time!"
Aeris smiled.
"All right."
He paused.
"How much time?"
Thistle burst into laughter.
Soon Aeris was laughing too.
And their laughter drifted across the floating island, carried gently by the mountain breeze.
Far below, the forests swayed.
The rivers sparkled.
And somewhere in the magical realm of DragonZone, two very different Dragonlings had discovered something wonderful together.
Thistle had brought patience, care and the magic of the earth.
Aeris had brought adventure, freedom and the magic of the wind.
Neither could have restored the forgotten garden alone.
But together, they had helped something beautiful grow in a place neither had ever imagined.
And from that day forward, whenever Aeris visited Thistle's little forest garden, he always remembered to land on the path.
Well...
Almost always.
Because some lessons take a little longer to grow than others.
And some friendships?
They give you the wings to discover places you'd never reach alone — and the roots to make them feel like home.
